NMA Confers Platinum Award on Otu for Health Sector Reforms

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State has awarded Governor Bassey Otu the prestigious Platinum Meritorious Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the health sector. The award, which has never been given to a governor before, was unanimously approved by the association's members at their Annual General Meeting.

According to Dr. Ezoke Epoke, a former NMA Chairman for Cross River State, the accolade is a recognition of Otu's tangible achievements that have significantly benefitted doctors, healthcare workers, and the entire health sector. The award highlights the consistent increase in the health sector budget allocation, which rose above 10% under Otu's administration compared to the previous 5-6%.

The NMA praised Otu for his efforts in human-resource development, including the 100% revision of doctors' salaries, which now match those of federal institutions and other states. They also commended the lifting of the embargo on health-sector recruitment, the approval of 40 doctor positions, and the extension of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years.

Additionally, the state's ongoing upgrade of primary healthcare centers and phased rehabilitation of general and cottage hospitals were highlighted as further evidence of Otu's commitment to healthcare infrastructure.

Three landmark pieces of legislation signed by Governor Otu were particularly praised: the Hospital Management Board Law, Medical Quackery Prohibition Law, and Drug Management Agency Law. These reforms, according to Epoke, will outlive Otu's tenure and strengthen the healthcare sector for the foreseeable future.

The NMA also credited the administration for creating a safer environment for medical practitioners, noting that kidnappings, which previously posed a severe threat, have not occurred since July 2023. Governor Otu received the award with humility and a sense of responsibility, acknowledging the efforts of every doctor, nurse, and healthcare worker.

He assured the association that his administration would continue to prioritize healthcare under its "People First" philosophy, pledging to build a trustworthy health system that attracts and retains the best healthcare professionals and provides quality care to all Cross Riverians.
