Niger: Police confirm IED found at New Bussa General Hospital

The Niger State Police Command has verified the presence of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) at New Bussa General Hospital, situated in Borgu Local Government Area. The discovery was made on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, around 11:20am. A local resident reported that a security personnel at the hospital spotted the device and quickly alerted conventional security operatives.

Upon receiving the alert, the police command's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was dispatched to the location. The EOD operatives deactivated the device, conducted a thorough sweep of the hospital premises, and secured the exhibit for further examination.

The incident reportedly caused widespread panic among residents near the hospital. At present, only patients and a select few relatives are permitted inside the hospital, with the general public barred from entry. Police and soldiers are currently patrolling the area, while security measures have been strengthened. The police have stated that normalcy has been restored in the vicinity.

However, the command has not disclosed the identity of the individual responsible for planting the device or the underlying motive behind the act.
