NHIS enrollment affected by illegal charges in Asutifi South – NHIA Manager

Joseph Sarkodie, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Manager for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region, has revealed that illegal charges imposed by some accredited health facilities are deterring NHIS subscribers from enrolling in the scheme. These unregistered fees are making the insurance scheme less attractive to potential members.

During a performance review meeting in Hwidiem, Mr Sarkodie emphasized that this practice is a clear violation of NHIS regulations and urged subscribers who encounter such charges to report these incidents to the NHIA.

He further advised affected subscribers to present receipts or other forms of evidence to facilitate an investigation by the Authority and to take the necessary actions against the offending service providers. Sarkodie stressed that resolving this issue is crucial for rebuilding confidence in the scheme and motivating more residents to enroll.

Meanwhile, George Mawuli, the NHIA Director for the Ahafo Region, pointed out poor network connectivity in certain communities as another obstacle to NHIS registration. In communities lacking reliable network services, residents often find it difficult to complete registration when NHIA officials visit. To address this, Mr Mawuli encouraged residents in such areas to utilize registration activities held in nearby communities with stable network connectivity.

He advised these individuals to travel to those locations when NHIA officers are present to ensure their enrollment and access to the scheme's benefits.
