Mumbai Ganeshotsav 2026: 42-Foot Sakinakyacha Mahararaja Raises Safety Concerns Over Tall Idol Competition

Mumbai (September 10, 2026) - The upcoming Ganeshotsav will feature the tallest Ganpati idol yet, Sakinakyacha Mahararaja, standing at an imposing 42 feet. While this idol draws attention, it also raises safety concerns among authorities and mandal offices. In recent years, multiple tall idols have fallen during transport, resulting in tragic accidents and injuries.

Disaster management teams, coast guards, and mandal officials have issued safety guidelines, but challenges persist. During visarjan, tall idols face obstacles like passing through tree branches, power cables, and bridges, often causing chaos. The BMC takes precautions by trimming trees, raising cables, and resurfacing roads, but the difficulties remain.

A senior BMC officer highlighted the challenges faced during visarjan, particularly at crowded sites like Girgaum Chowpatty, where transport failures and tall idol weight make it difficult for first responders. The officer also expressed concerns over immersion at Powai Lake, as taller idols increase safety and security hazards and require additional charges for volunteers and contractual workers.

Despite a previous resolution in 2008 to limit idol height to 18 feet, some mandals have continued the tradition, causing renewed calls for government intervention to implement binding height restrictions for all tall idols.
