Molly's legacy endures as murderer jailed for 28 years

Molly Ticehurst, a 28-year-old childcare worker, has left a lasting legacy through her tragic murder in 2024. Her killer, ex-boyfriend Daniel Billings, has been jailed for at least 20 years, with a maximum term of 28 years, according to the NSW Supreme Court in Orange, central western NSW. Billings was found guilty of stabbing Ms Ticehurst multiple times in her bedroom, as revenge for her reporting rape allegations to police.

The attack was in line with threats he had made towards her following their relationship's end in December 2023. Billings had previously threatened to kill Ms Ticehurst and had even attacked her dachshund puppy with a hammer. The judge, Justice Natalie Adams, emphasized the extreme nature of Billings' crime, which was motivated by retribution and extreme hatred.

Her parents Tony Ticehurst and Kate Shaw, calling for a life sentence, left the court visibly shaken and did not comment. The case has sparked a national campaign against domestic and gendered violence, leading to changes in NSW laws. Billings, who pleaded guilty to murder after over 500 days of legal negotiations, will be eligible for parole in April 2044.
