MoGCSP takes social protection dialogue to Teshie

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) recently held a community engagement in Teshie, a suburb of Accra, to discuss social protection issues. The event, organized in partnership with the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service (OHLGS), allowed residents to voice their concerns and learn about government initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals and households.

Speaking at the event, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, emphasized that social protection is a collective responsibility, not solely the government's duty. She highlighted the importance of community participation in ensuring the effectiveness of social protection programs. Dr Lartey pointed out that Ghana has recently passed two key pieces of legislation – the Social Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1148) and the Social Protection Regulation, 2026 (L.I. 2521) – to enhance coordination and delivery of these services.

Effective social protection, according to Dr Lartey, necessitates collaboration among various stakeholders, including local authorities, traditional leaders, faith-based organizations, civil society groups, and citizens. Communities play a crucial role in identifying vulnerable persons and ensuring they receive the necessary assistance.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection aims to foster closer ties with communities by hosting these dialogue series, which provide a forum for citizens to share their experiences and concerns directly with government officials.

In addition to the dialogue sessions, the MoGCSP has collaborated with the National Health Insurance Authority to facilitate free registration and renewal of social protection benefits for eligible vulnerable and indigent individuals. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to expanding access to essential social services for those most in need.
