A significant majority, comprising 43%, opined that with insufficient safeguards, AI could potentially attain consciousness.

This sentiment was echoed in the comments, where one reader remarked, "If AI did become self-aware, we would not know, as it would do everything to hide its abilities. The main problem is what it would do next!"

Other readers shared their apprehensions, arguing that while AI is a remarkable creation, it could also pose grave dangers. A commenter likened AI's potential to other revolutionary technologies, such as the internet and telephone, stating that humans may never know what is true or false, and it could eventually lead to humanity's extinction.

The poll's second most popular choice, held by 29% of respondents, suggested that AI may become conscious only if it possesses a more advanced architecture. This view was reflected in the majority of the comments, with readers delving into philosophical concepts surrounding consciousness and intelligence.

Meta-cognition, the ability of a system to understand its own cognitive processes, emerged as a crucial topic of discussion. One reader questioned whether consciousness is a quantum phenomenon and pondered how self-awareness emerges in constructed systems. Given the limited understanding of how self-awareness arises in other animals, the reader emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the emergence of self-awareness in AI systems.

Only a small fraction, 10%, of the respondents claimed that AI will never attain consciousness, with the majority of them fearing the emergence of robot overlords. One reader humorously suggested that in the future, "We will be assimilated," drawing a parallel between AI and the Transformers narrative.
