Matt Mullenweg reportedly returns as Automattic CEO two days after getting booted

Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg has been placed on paid leave of absence by the company's board of directors, despite his objections. The move, which has raised concerns among enterprise IT executives who rely on WordPress, may not significantly impact the long-term viability or liability for these customers.

Frank Dickson, principal analyst at Dickson Research, stated that the part of WordPress that keeps enterprise IT up at night is not Automattic's org chart, but WordPress.org, the plugin and theme directory that every WordPress site pulls its security updates from, and the WordPress trademark. Mullenweg personally owns and controls both WordPress.org and the WordPress trademark, outside of Automattic.

The appointment of CFO Mark Davies as interim CEO and the change in Automattic's hosting business have been made, but the control of WordPress.org remains unchanged. Mullenweg has expressed his opposition to the move, warning of smear attacks and distancing himself from Automattic while looking to hire external sysadmins and security researchers to counter the "Matt is an idiot and shouldn’t run an ice cream stand" allegations.

While Automattic's statement emphasizes full confidence in Mark Davies' leadership, the potential next steps remain unclear, with questions remaining about whether Mullenweg's control over WordPress.org will be restrained. Analysts and experts agree that the primary concern for IT leaders revolves around the potential for unilateral control over critical open-source infrastructure, rather than Mullenweg's leadership as CEO at Automattic.
