Malaysia’s education warning bell cannot be ignored

Malaysia's education system is facing a critical warning that cannot be ignored, according to the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa 2025) report. The findings reveal alarming gaps in students' proficiency in mathematics, reading and science compared to their peers in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Only 35% of Malaysian students reached baseline proficiency in mathematics, while only 44% reached baseline proficiency in reading, and 54% in science. These deficiencies pose a significant threat to Malaysia's potential to become a high-income economy, a regional digital hub and an Industry 4.0 nation. The report emphasizes that the foundation for Malaysia's future must be built through the development of human capacity, rather than merely relying on slogans and plans.

The failure lies with the education system, which must focus on teaching students to think critically, rather than simply memorizing answers. The assessment also highlights the need for a broad base of competence, as well as exceptional minds capable of driving tomorrow's industries. Inequality in educational outcomes is another pressing concern, with disadvantaged students performing significantly below their more privileged peers.
