Limpopo father gets life for killing daughter after anger over protection order

A man from Tshitale, Limpopo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and an additional 10 years for arson after he torched his ex-partner's house and killed their four-year-old daughter. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson for the Limpopo regional, Tshilidzi Vincent Mudau, 39, pleaded not guilty to both charges, representing himself during the trial. The court ruled that the sentences should run concurrently, leading to a life sentence.

The attack was triggered by Mudau's threats to burn down his ex-partner's house and kill their daughter if she didn't allow him access to the child. Police received reports of the fire later that day, and when the mother arrived at the scene with family members, Mudau was there, having snatched the child from her arms. He brutally assaulted the child, breaking her skull twice before she passed away.

The prosecution emphasized that the crime was a brutal form of gender-based violence against one of society's most vulnerable members. The accused had a history of violent offenses, with eight previous convictions demonstrating a pattern of violent behavior. The mother had previously applied for a protection order against Mudau on December 4, 2023.

State Prosecutor Lebogang Maluleke argued that the crime highlighted the need for justice and rehabilitation. She also pointed out that Mudau showed no remorse and was unsuitable for rehabilitation. The court decided to sentence the crime concurrently, resulting in an effective life sentence for Mudau.

Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions Ivy Thenga praised the outcome, stating that human life's sanctity cannot be overemphasized. She vowed to continue pursuing violent offenders to protect the vulnerable members of society and send a clear message against such conduct. Thenga commended the prosecution and investigating teams for their diligence in securing justice for the victim and her family.
