Lethbridge firefighters honoured at annual memorial: ‘What we signed up to do’

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, firefighters in Lethbridge gathered for their annual memorial service to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Brent Nunweiler, president of the Local IAFF 237 Firefighters Union, recalled how the attacks changed the profession forever. Unlike the tragedy that unfolded in New York and Washington, D.C., Lethbridge's firefighters remember the sacrifices made by their own members, both recent and past.

Each IAFF member in North America who passed away in the previous year is honored by having their name called at the ceremony. In Lethbridge, all local members, regardless of when they died, are read aloud, with their families present to acknowledge their service. Nunweiler emphasized the importance of recognizing the families of fallen firefighters, ensuring they know their loved ones' service is remembered and valued.

Many of those honored died from cancer, a silent killer that has claimed numerous firefighters since 9/11 and throughout the years that followed. Nunweiler stressed that the dangers of the profession extend beyond the flames, as the risks linger long after the firefighters return home. He affirmed that none of them would choose a different profession, as it is what they signed up to do.

Neil Laboske, commander of the IAFF 237 honour guard, noted that while the sadness and grief felt each year on 9/11 remain, the emotion is not the only one evoked. The unity and camaraderie displayed in the days, weeks, and years following the attacks continue to define the spirit of the event. Laboske stressed the importance of maintaining that unity while honoring the fallen, hoping it serves as a reminder for people to stop, look around, and remember what is truly important.
