KZN Premier Thami Ntuli questions foreign governments’ response to Durban refugee camp

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has expressed frustration over the lack of assistance from foreign governments and international organizations for refugees who have been living on the streets in Durban for about four months. The refugees, primarily from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda, have been camped on Che Guevara Road after fleeing their homes due to intimidation and hostility.

Ntuli questioned why foreign governments were not taking responsibility for their nationals and why they were not providing immediate support. He also expressed disappointment that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) did not attend a meeting about the crisis to see the conditions firsthand. Tensions between the refugees and the anti-illegal immigration group March and March have escalated, resulting in violent confrontations.

Ntuli emphasized the need for practical assistance, such as providing meals, while authorities work on a long-term solution for the refugees.
