Kung wins Vuelta time-trial as Mas retains lead

Jerez de la Frontera, Spain: Swiss cyclist Stefan Kung claimed victory in Thursday's stage 18 time-trial, while Spain's Enric Mas maintained his overall lead at the Vuelta a Espana. However, four-time winner Primoz Roglic surpassed Mas by more than 30 seconds, narrowing the Movistar rider's lead to 1 minute and 37 seconds. With only three stages remaining, including two consecutive mountain top finishes, Mas appears increasingly likely to secure his first home Grand Tour victory.

Mas expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that he lost less time than he anticipated. The 31-year-old has consistently finished second in previous Grand Tours, including two third-place finishes to Roglic and Ben O'Connor. Roglic, finishing fourth in Thursday's 32.1km time trial, is currently close behind Mas, just 19 seconds behind Kung.

British cyclist Callum Thornley and Portuguese Joao Almeida followed in second and third place, respectively. Primoz Roglic dominated, finishing 33 seconds ahead of Mas and 1 hour and 28 minutes ahead of Felix Gall. Gall trails Mas by over three minutes but still maintains a two-minute lead over fourth-placed Richard Carapaz, who won the previous Tour de France.

Briton Oscar Onley, in fifth place overall, has extended his white jersey lead to nearly a minute ahead of Slovenian Jakob Omrzel. The final stage, stage 19, is a challenging 210.8km ride with hill climbs and an altitude finish at Penas Blancas.
