Kindiki warns stalled new Nithi Bridge could remain idle over compensation row

NAIROBI, Kenya – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has expressed concern that the New Nithi Bridge project may remain idle due to unresolved land compensation issues. Kindiki revealed that the contractor possesses the necessary funds for the project but cannot commence work until landowners affected by the construction receive compensation through the National Land Commission.

The DP emphasized that the Sh7 billion earmarked for the project is already in the contractor's possession, and the sole obstacle is the compensation process for affected individuals. Kindiki warned that if the Chinese contractor, selected for the project in May 2026, does not proceed, only three options remain. However, Kindiki affirmed that the bridge will be constructed and the compensation issues resolved.

The New Nithi Bridge, a 2.7-kilometre road alignment project, involves an 880-metre bridge and viaduct set to rise nearly 100 metres above the River Nithi Valley. The construction is projected to take 24 months, with the aim of reducing accidents caused by the existing bridge's steep, narrow approaches. The bridge, awarded to China Wu Yi Company Limited, is expected to feature wider carriageways, pedestrian walkways, and gentler gradients to improve safety and tourism in the region.
