Kenya: Govt Urges Asal Residents to Relocate From Flood-Prone Areas Ahead of Heavy Rains

Nairobi — The Kenyan government has stepped up efforts to safeguard residents in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) who reside in flood-prone regions, as the country anticipates heavy rainfall. The Acting Principal Secretary for the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development, Caroline Karugu, emphasized the vulnerability of pastoralist and agro-pastoral communities to extreme weather events.

Karugu revealed that the government has intensified mapping of hotspots and community awareness campaigns in river basins and low-lying ASAL areas to pinpoint areas with high flooding risks. She urged residents near flood-prone corridors to heed early warnings and relocate to safer zones before the onset of heavy downpours. Pastoralists and agro-pastoralists are among the most adversely affected by extreme weather, according to Karugu.

The government is striving to bolster early warning systems and readiness in vulnerable populations as Kenya prepares for heightened rainfall. Early action is crucial in mitigating loss of lives, displacement, and property damage resulting from flooding, Karugu asserted. Individuals in susceptible areas have been advised to stay vigilant, monitor official weather and disaster management advisories, and collaborate with local authorities on evacuation and preventive measures.

The intensified preparedness measures are part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen coordination and early warning mechanisms ahead of the October-December rainy season. Authorities have consistently stressed the significance of heeding early warnings instead of awaiting the occurrence of extreme weather events.
