Ken Griffey Jr embraces firefighter's family in MLB Network 9/11 doc

MLB Network released a two-hour documentary called "When America Took the Field" to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Former Cincinnati Reds star and Moeller High School graduate Ken Griffey Jr. is featured in the film. The documentary highlights how baseball united Americans in the wake of one of the darkest days in American history.

Ken's connection to the tragedy stems from an email from the widow of FDNY firefighter Kenny Marino, who was killed during the attacks. The email expressed gratitude for Ken Griffey Jr.'s favorite player status and requested a symbolic gesture from the baseball icon. Kenny Marino traveled to Seattle to watch Ken Griffey Jr. play, only to be tragically killed on 9/11.

Griffey recalls the firefighter's gesture of sending him a T-shirt from his fire station, which left a lasting impact on him. Katrina Marino, Kenny's widow, expressed her gratitude for the gesture and the opportunity to spend time with Ken Griffey Jr. and his children. She emphasized the importance of giving them something to smile about, as it was crucial for her and her family.

Ken Griffey Jr. visited the 9/11 memorial site, where he spent about an hour searching for Kenny Marino's name, acknowledging the immense grief and ongoing struggles of the firefighter's family.
