Kehlani & Monaleo Speak on Balancing Music and Motherhood at Billboard House

During the Billboard House summit's 2026 R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players celebration, Kehlani, a Grammy-winning singer, and Monaleo, a rising rapper, spoke on motherhood, identity, and self-care at a panel titled "Like Minded." The conversation, moderated by Sonni Williams and Gail Mitchell, addressed how the two mothers balance their professional and family lives. The pair offered insights and shared personal experiences regarding motherhood and its impact on their careers.

Kehlani emphasized the importance of admitting that motherhood can be challenging, particularly in finding time and space for one's own identity. She discussed the internal battle of wanting to spend more time with friends while maintaining the appearance of being a perfect mother, which is an unrealistic expectation. Monaleo agreed, adding that it's okay to make mistakes as a parent, as it humanizes the experience despite the pressure to be a superwoman. She emphasized the need to continue showing up for her child in the best way possible.

Monaleo explained that motherhood has made her craft more intentional, as she is now more mindful of the messages her music conveys to young listeners. She aims to sneak in meaningful content, such as Black history, within her catchy tunes. Simultaneously, she wants her son to avoid being influenced by negativity. For Kehlani, motherhood reignited her passion for her career, as her daughter inspires her to keep reinventing her joy and excitement.

Williams concluded the conversation by highlighting the significance of these discussions, stating that being a mother puts a battery in your back like nothing else. She praised the strong Black women present, reminding them that they are not just moms but also business owners, household leaders, and executives.
