Israeli Arms Maker Elbit's Planned German Plant Faces Far-right AfD Scrutiny

Israel's Elbit Systems is reportedly in talks to establish a defense-components plant in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, expected to become the next premier of Saxony-Anhalt, has expressed openness to arms production, suggesting it could provide resources for their planned deportation campaigns.

The AfD opposes Germany's defense spending and military support for Ukraine, raising concerns about the future of this investment in Sangerhausen. AfD politician Siegmund stated that the party does not condemn military equipment production for domestic purposes, viewing it as necessary for repatriation and deportation efforts. Local officials report that the plant would focus on manufacturing components for other German companies, with no plans to produce complete weapons systems, drones, or artillery shells.

The factory could potentially create up to 400 jobs. Elbit Systems has indicated they are considering future expansion in Germany and currently operate across multiple locations in the country, employing hundreds of German workers. The AfD, which seeks to form a state government after narrowly winning an election, has pledged to deport immigrants, implement citizen patrols, and establish separate classrooms for refugee children upon taking power.

The party is monitoring the situation in Sangerhausen, expressing concern about potential involvement in foreign conflicts. Any support for the project could complicate discussions with the left-wing populist Banished Social Party (BSW), the only party not ruling out cooperation with the AfD. The BSW, like the AfD, opposes German military aid to Ukraine and has campaigned against the Sangerhausen project, dismissing economic arguments for attracting foreign defense manufacturers.
