Iran faces strategic dilemma as war of attrition drags on

The United States and Iran find themselves in another phase of confrontation, marked by military and economic pressure that has forced Tehran to consider the risks of escalation versus the slim chance of a negotiated settlement. The latest escalation began with a US strike on forces belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in southern Iran, according to Iranian accounts.

Washington has since claimed it suspects Iranian forces are preparing to deploy rockets carrying mines in the Strait, one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints. In response, Iran attacked US bases in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This military escalation comes as Iran has already endured weeks under a US-imposed siege on its ports, adding further strain to an economy that was already struggling before the latest crisis.

The Iranian rial has experienced a significant depreciation, trading at approximately 2.2 million rials per dollar, compared to around 1.8 million prior to the siege. Nevertheless, despite the mounting pressure, the government has thus far avoided widespread shortages that could spark a domestic crisis. However, another vulnerability is increasingly coming to light: gasoline.
