iPhone 18 Pro series get Variable Aperture as 'most important' camera feature

Apple has introduced variable aperture to the primary camera of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This important feature allows users to control the amount of light reaching the sensor for the first time on an iPhone. The new 48MP Fusion Main camera, redesigned sensor, and Pro Controls are complementing this feature. The six laser-cut blades inside the lens can move between four aperture settings, and the camera can automatically adjust the aperture based on the scene.

This update enhances exposure, depth of field, and motion capture, adding capabilities that software alone cannot replicate. Apple emphasizes that aperture is a significant camera component that most users don't typically see. With a lower f-number, the opening is wider, allowing more light to reach the sensor, which can be beneficial in darker conditions.

Conversely, a narrower aperture lets in less light but keeps more of the scene in focus. The iPhone 18 Pro's lens can open as wide as f/1.48 and then close down to f/1.8, f/2.8 or f/4.0, with the blades moving smoothly between the settings. Users can manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and white balance using Apple's Pro Controls, providing more creative control over the final image.

The most noticeable effect of the variable aperture is depth of field. A wider aperture (f/1.48) creates more background blur when the subject is close to the camera and the background is farther away. On the other hand, stopping down to f/4.0 keeps more of the scene in focus, which is advantageous for group shots and landscapes.

Although the variable aperture is only available on the main camera, Apple's Pro Controls extend to video, enabling users to manually adjust aperture and shutter speed.
