Interview: Andreas Bovenschulte: „Die AfD wird den Bundesrat nicht lahmlegen“

Andreas Bovenschulte, a political analyst, discusses the recent election results in Sachsen-Anhalt where Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 44 percent of the vote compared to the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 9 percent. The analyst expresses shock at the outcome, highlighting that two-thirds of those who criticized their own economic situation voted for the AfD, while few supported the SPD.

However, the AfD offers no solutions to the issues facing their country. On the contrary, they advocate for leaving the Euro-Union, a move that would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and significantly impact people with modest to middle incomes. Despite this, the AfD enjoys widespread support. The analyst questions how the AfD manages to spread hope where the SPD fails, suggesting that fear is the raw material the AfD uses to achieve success.

The current situation does not mirror a historical crisis with a 20 percent drop in economic activity, rising mass unemployment, and widespread social destitution. Nevertheless, many people's concern over what lies ahead and their position in society is so great that they support a party that transforms this fear into an aggressive nationalist vision of the future.

The implication is that with us, everything will be different and better, and all those who do not fit within our definition of Volksgemeinschaft (people's community) will be cast aside. Rational arguments alone are insufficient; we need a positive emotional counter-narrative.
