HSWU urges members to prioritise savings, investment

The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) celebrated its 82nd anniversary with a focus on encouraging members to prioritize savings, investment, and collective financial planning to secure their financial future after active employment. The anniversary, themed “Securing Our Future Together,” was observed across the union’s 10 administrative regions through various activities, including patient clinics, welfare seminars, clean-up exercises, and health screenings.

General Secretary Dr. Owusu Ansah highlighted the milestone as a testament to the union’s history of sacrifice, resilience, solidarity, and commitment to health workers' welfare and dignity. He emphasized that successive generations of members had endured challenging conditions to build the union into its current state. Dr. Ansah urged members to reflect on ways to enhance their financial security and that of future generations by embracing disciplined savings and investment, viewing contributions to the HSWU Tier 3 Fund as an investment in themselves and their families.

Dr. Derrick Amoateng, the immediate past Chairperson of the Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme, also addressed health workers, stressing the importance of early retirement planning and regular monitoring of pension contributions. He advocated for increased collaboration among government, regulators, employers, trustees, fund managers, organized labor, and workers to improve pension adequacy and retirement security, echoing the principle that solidarity has sustained the HSWU for 82 years.
