Gordie Howe bridge saw more than 270k crossings in its first full month: StatCan

Statistics Canada reports that the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge has recorded more than 270,000 crossings in its first full month of operation. Nearly 135,000 of these were return trips by Canadian residents, while 101,000 were made by U.S. residents. The bridge, which opened on July 27 after facing delays and tensions involving U.S. President Donald Trump, saw 34,800 transport trucks enter Canada during the same period.

Other major border crossings in Windsor, including the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, saw 348,000 inbound trips by Canadians and Americans in August, marking a decrease of over 35 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Canadian residents' return trips across the border have increased by nearly nine percent in August 2025 compared to the previous year, though they still remain lower than the 3.3 million trips made in August 2024.
