FCT sets up task force to curb maternal deaths

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has launched a task force to address maternal deaths in Nigeria's capital. During the activation of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) on Friday, officials identified delays in seeking healthcare, socio-cultural barriers, transportation challenges, and financial constraints as factors contributing to preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

A four-day community engagement and stakeholder consultation helped the task force pinpoint critical issues such as women delaying medical attention, delivering outside health facilities, and giving birth to traditional birth attendants. The FCT administration, recognizing maternal deaths as unacceptable, has joined 33 other states in implementing the MAMII approach, which aims to improve access to quality maternal and newborn health services through stronger community engagement and partnerships.

The initiative has already led to a 17% reduction in maternal mortality in pilot areas. The newly formed task force will coordinate interventions to reduce maternal and newborn deaths, with a mandate that continues as long as women deliver in the FCT.
