Expert: BRICS enters new stage after 20 years of cooperation

The BRICS group commemorates its 20-year anniversary in 2026, marking a new era of cooperation, according to Lyu Wenbao, an associate researcher at the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. In an interview with TV BRICS, Lyu emphasized that the group should prioritize strengthening consensus, promoting inclusive global governance, and fostering people-to-people exchanges.

Lyu stressed the importance of upholding multilateralism and ensuring fair, inclusive global governance. She also highlighted practical cooperation in trade, finance, green development, and the digital economy as a priority, urging BRICS nations to create opportunities and benefit developing countries, especially those in the Global South.

Additionally, Lyu stressed the significance of expanding people-to-people exchanges, noting that these connections can foster mutual understanding and lay the groundwork for enduring cooperation. Looking back on the past two decades, Lyu identified the development of a comprehensive cooperation mechanism as a key achievement, mentioning the group's establishment of a multi-level framework encompassing leaders' summits and institutions such as the New Development Bank.

She also noted the expansion of economic and practical cooperation, which has evolved beyond trade and investment to encompass renewable energy, the digital economy, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
