Eni, Vitol move to secure two Tano Basin blocks

Eni Ghana and Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd have reached agreements with the Government of Ghana for two offshore petroleum blocks in the Tano Basin. The Memoranda of Understanding, signed on September 10, 2026, cover the GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 blocks, totaling around 2,100 square kilometers with water depths of 750 to 2,800 meters. The agreements, finalized in Accra, signify a step towards opening the blocks for exploration and expanding petroleum activity in the Tano Basin, one of Ghana's established offshore hydrocarbon areas.

Eni's move aligns with its near-field and Infrastructure-Led Exploration strategy, aiming to leverage existing infrastructure and proximity to producing areas. The company's commitment to Ghana's upstream petroleum sector remains strong, with its current equity production amounting to approximately 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Vitol holds a 35.6% stake, accompanied by GNPC's 20% ownership. The OCTP project, a key offshore petroleum development, serves as a foundational operational base for Eni and its partners, while Eni's joint ventures in Ghana also focus on training, economic diversification, and energy access. The signing of the MoUs does not automatically finalize the Petroleum Agreements, but it represents progress towards their conclusion in line with Ghana's legal and regulatory framework.
