Energy drinks, alcohol, damage liver, kidney – Doctors warn Nigerian youths

A senior medical professional in Abeokuta has cautioned Nigerians, particularly the younger population, against consuming alcohol, energy drinks and carbonated beverages due to their detrimental effects on vital organs. Dr. Okoro Sulaiman, a Senior Registrar in Community Medicine and Primary Care at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abeokuta, stated that alcohol and its chemical constituents, such as caffeine, are harmful to the liver, kidneys and other organs.

Dr. Sulaiman emphasized that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption and advised total abstinence as the best course of action. He also spoke at a programme organized by the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Unification Campus Fellowship, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), where he recommended reducing salt intake, fried foods and beverages, and replacing beef with healthier alternatives like snail, fish, chicken and goat meat.

The doctor emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, as a key factor in disease prevention. Dr. Dosunmu Adesegun, a Medical Officer with the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, highlighted that lifestyle factors account for 50% of managing ailments, while medication contributes only 10-15%.

He stressed the importance of regular check-ups for early detection of health issues. Additionally, Dr. Adesegun warned against patronizing tattoo artists using unsterilized instruments, as it can lead to the transmission of infections. The event was appreciated by Mrs. Mary Gbamigboye, the Chairperson of Abule -ijeun kukute, Abeokuta, who urged the government to address issues like poor road conditions, lack of clean water, and high rent in the student area.
