El Jalapeño: Trump suggests renaming New Mexico as ‘New America,’ Mexico as ‘South America’

President Donald Trump has proposed renaming Mexico to "South America," according to a series of social media posts on the platform Truth Social. The rebranding would also rename the state of New Mexico to "New America." Trump claims that the current naming system is redundant and confusing, especially with Mexico and New Mexico existing side by side. In a tongue-in-cheek manner, he suggests that renaming will bring "unprecedented brand clarity" to the Western Hemisphere.

However, Mexico's Foreign Affairs Ministry has noted the posts with practiced diplomatic composure, stating that official letterhead would require updating and thus introducing unnecessary diplomatic expense. International trade analysts have pointed out that a complete renaming would necessitate alterations to thousands of bilateral treaties, shipping manifests, and consumer packaging.

Cartographers have also commented that global geographic standards are governed by international consensus, which would not be influenced by individual online posts. When asked about the naming conflict with the twelve sovereign nations already occupying the continent of South America, the White House referred to the possibility of calling those countries "Farther South America" instead.

In response to the proposal, Mexican officials have remained composed, expressing appreciation for the online activity but reaffirming their commitment to being called "Mexico."
