Delhi’s big BRICS security operation explained

Delhi is bracing for a significant security operation as it prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit, with thousands of security personnel on standby. The two-day summit, set to commence Saturday, will see world leaders from Russia, China, Iran, South Africa, Egypt, the United Nations, and the World Health Organization convene at Bharat Mandapam.

Delhi Police have deployed 15,000 personnel, along with 200 paramilitary companies and over 500 CCTV cameras, to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The city's traffic police have warned that commuters should expect temporary stoppages, diversions, and restrictions along key routes used by VVIP convoys. However, traffic will continue to move normally wherever security permits.

Notable attendees include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The summit will involve numerous high-security movements, with over 35 roads potentially affected and dozens of VVIP movements expected daily.

Delhi Metro and city buses will operate during the summit, with possible temporary restrictions at certain stations or entry/exit gates. Autos, taxis, and app-based cab services will remain functional, though their access to controlled zones may be impacted. Commuters are advised to check their routes in advance, carry necessary documents, and allow extra time for potential delays.
