Daesang expands into biopharmaceuticals using 70 years of fermentation tech
South Korean company Daesang expanded its operations into the global biopharmaceutical sector leveraging seven decades of proprietary fermentation technology to manufacture high purity medical grade amino acids
SEOUL, South Korea - Korean food and biotechnology company Daesang has announced its expansion into the biopharmaceutical sector, harnessing fermentation technology derived from its popular fermented seasoning brand MIWON. Instead of producing general-purpose amino acids like feed-grade lysine, the company aims to develop high-purity amino acids for medical infusion solutions, clinical nutrition, and biopharmaceutical applications, positioning itself as a significant growth driver.
Earlier this year, Daesang acquired AMINO GmbH, a German firm specializing in pharmaceutical-grade amino acids, bolstering its entry into the global biopharmaceutical market. Established in 2006, AMINO manufactures high-purity amino acids for medical infusion, clinical nutrition, cell culture media, and biopharmaceutical excipients.
The company operates an R&D center and a 6,000 m² production facility in northern Germany, maintaining strong relationships with global biopharmaceutical and clinical nutrition firms. With the acquisition, Daesang gains AMINO's amino acid purification technology, production facilities, European regulatory expertise, and a global customer network.
To optimize its production processes, Daesang plans to utilize its Korean facilities for raw material creation and AMINO's German facility for final purification. The company aims to maintain its European presence while expanding into North America and Asia. Since introducing MIWON, a sugarcane-based fermented seasoning, Daesang has bolstered its biotechnology division's competitiveness through continuous technological innovation.
Currently, the MIWON brand is exported to more than 80 countries, supplying a variety of amino acids, including feed-grade lysine and L-Histidine, to global markets. In the future, Daesang intends to enhance production efficiency across its product line while concentrating on premium, high-purity amino acids for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.
Daesang's CEO, Jung-bae Lim, stated, "We are leveraging fermentation technology that began with MIWON and our amino acid business capabilities to enter the high-value biopharmaceutical sector. We will continue establishing overseas operations and pursue technology exchange and partnerships with international companies as we strive to become a global leader."
