Costa: Strengthening Support For Ukraine Must Go Hand In Hand With EU Security

European Council President António Costa emphasized in Warsaw that bolstering support for Ukraine should go hand in hand with fortifying the European Union's security and safeguarding its borders. He made these remarks during a joint briefing in Warsaw alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, according to UATV English.

Costa stressed that Ukraine's struggle for sovereignty is emblematic of the broader security concerns faced by Europe. He commended Poland's pivotal role in aiding Ukraine, given its status as a key Eastern European nation directly impacted by Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Costa reiterated that Ukraine support must remain a top EU priority, paralleling the need to enhance the EU's defense capacities, fortify its external borders, and prepare for potential threats. He underscored the necessity to bolster European defense capabilities by 2030, as Russian aggression poses a prolonged challenge to European security.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk briefed Costa on the Eastern border situation and Poland's expectations regarding the trajectory of Russia's conflict with Ukraine. Tusk highlighted that Warsaw is receiving intelligence from allies, including the United States, and urged Europe to be prepared for various scenarios.

Tusk emphasized the importance of pooling resources for European security, reinforcing the Eastern flank, and executing defense initiatives, such as the SAFE program. The two leaders also discussed the forthcoming 2028-2034 EU budget, the competitiveness of the European economy, innovation, and the EU's strategic robustness.
