CooperVision contact lens shipment stranded on disabled Amazon cargo jet

CooperVision, a contact lens manufacturer, has a significant shipment of eye care products stranded on a disabled Amazon cargo jet that crashed at Miami International Airport. The Boeing 767-300 freighter aircraft, operated by 21 Air in support of Amazon's logistics network, was carrying more than 32,000 pounds of contact lenses when it struck two vehicles, resulting in five deaths and multiple injuries.

CooperVision, a subsidiary of CooperCompanies, acknowledged the involvement of CooperVision as the primary cargo owner and stated that they support the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other authorities as needed. The crash suggests that the flight primarily served Amazon Air Cargo, a logistics unit launched by Amazon to expedite package delivery for Prime members.

The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation revealed that Flight 7598 overshot the runway's touchdown zone, had difficulty slowing down, and failed to engage speed brakes or thrust reversers, ultimately exiting the runway. The pilot had his type certification for the Boeing 767-300 cargo jet only in May. The widow of one of the five aircraft cleaning workers killed in the accident has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Amazon, Amazon Air Cargo, and other related parties, alleging pilot mistakes, safety failures, and problems with the aircraft itself.
