Clandestine Cameras in Bogota Trigger a New Security Alarm

Hidden cameras installed on utility poles in Bogota's residential neighborhoods have sparked a security alarm, leaving residents and authorities with questions about their origin, purpose, and who is watching through them. These cameras, often found in areas such as Pablo VI, Rafael Nunez, Nicolas de Federman, and Las Mercedes, were installed in an unconventional manner, sometimes connected to solar panels.

While they may seem innocuous, some residents fear they could be used for criminal surveillance, potentially tracking routines or identifying targets before a crime.

Bogota has a vast network of public and private cameras, making the addition of unknown devices challenging to detect. The city's Metropolitan Police and District Secretariat for Security, Coexistence and Justice have been tasked with investigating the cameras' authorization and identifying their source. However, no public information has been released regarding who installed the devices, who controls them, or how long they have been active.

Council member Juan David Quintero has called for authorities to inspect the cameras, determine their legitimacy, and investigate any potential link to recent robberies in the affected neighborhoods. The issue highlights the need for improved oversight and identification mechanisms for surveillance devices installed on public infrastructure. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Bogota is simultaneously investing in its surveillance network as part of a broader strategy to combat crime.
