CIA declassifies briefs about Al-Qaeda on 9/11 anniversary

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the CIA has released over 70 intelligence briefs related to Al-Qaeda and its founder, Osama bin Laden. This release marks a significant step towards greater transparency regarding America's most sensitive intelligence publications from the years leading up to and after one of the darkest moments in the nation's history.

According to the CIA, these briefs illustrate the evolving understanding of Al-Qaeda and the agency's efforts to warn of potential attacks, despite the availability of scant, ambiguous, and incomplete information.

A September 10, 1998 brief, with some redactions, noted the possibility of Al-Qaeda flying an explosive-packed airplane into a U.S. city. Another dated December 4, 1998, also containing redacted sections, suggested that bin Laden and his associates were preparing attacks on the United States, including hijacking aircraft. The released documents encompass a time frame starting during the presidency of Bill Clinton and extending into George W. Bush's tenure, when 19 Al-Qaeda operatives hijacked four airliners on September 11, 2001.

Two of the planes crashed into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, resulting in their catastrophic collapse. A third aircraft struck the Pentagon, while the fourth, believed to have been targeting Congress or the White House, ultimately crashed into a field in Pennsylvania as passengers fought back against the hijackers. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the United States initiated military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, collectively known as the "War on Terror," which have resulted in the loss of countless lives.
