Chennai, the city that made me brave and smart, says RJ Balaji

Chennai is my city, I tell you. It is where I was born, raised, and have lived all my life. From the moment I stepped into this world, Chennai has molded me into the person I am today. Brave, smart, and kind – these are the qualities I attribute to this city. It taught me resilience when I had to travel all the way to stay over at a friend's house overnight, and it instilled kindness when I became a volunteer during the Chennai floods.

From my early days in the sixth standard, I have seen the city change and grow. I have made friends from all walks of life – from tailors to AC mechanics. These experiences have given me a broad perspective on people and their varied lives.

I was there when Chennai faced its worst floods, and I have been part of jallikattu celebrations. I have seen the city's spirit soar high during these times, and it has stayed with me.

There is a neem tree near Thiruvanmiyur RTO office that I have planted with my grandfather years ago. I still visit it, touch its bark, and hug it. My children now join me there. Even while riding my two-wheeler, I wear my helmet and mask, and take this tree as my constant companion.

Chennai, my city, has given me courage and knowledge. It has made me brave, smart, and kind. This city means everything to me.
