California Dem faces election turbulence

California Democratic Representative Jimmy Gomez finds himself in a tight spot as he prepares for the general election, according to recent polling results shared exclusively with Semafor. The survey, commissioned by the newly formed Guardrails Alliance, reveals a surprisingly close contest between Gomez and his Democratic rival Angela Gonzales-Torres. According to the poll, Gomez holds 38% support while Gonzales-Torres leads with 41%, a margin that falls within the 4.9% margin of error.

Guardrails Alliance, the group responsible for commissioning the poll, was established this year with the aim of countering the influence of pro-AI groups such as the Leading the Future super PAC network. The poll also highlights potential attack lines against Gomez. When voters are informed that Gomez is backed by Leading the Future, Gonzales-Torres secures a significant lead of 63% to Gomez's 22%.

Progressive groups, including the Justice Democrats, have taken note of the race and view Gomez as a vulnerable candidate. While Gomez managed to secure re-election against Democrats in previous cycles, he recently faced an ethics investigation related to alleged sexual misconduct. This incident could potentially harm his chances in the upcoming election.
