Broadband internet services to resume in AJK capital after months-long disruption

Broadband internet services are set to resume in the capital city of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) starting tomorrow, restoring fixed-line internet access after a prolonged disruption affecting mobile data services. Residents can now expect DSL connectivity, although 3G and 4G mobile internet services will remain unavailable. This development is anticipated to alleviate difficulties faced by students, businesses, journalists, professionals, and households during the suspension of mobile internet.

However, those reliant on mobile data will continue to experience connectivity issues, especially without access to fixed-line DSL connections. The government's decision follows repeated demands from residents and business communities for the restoration of regular internet connectivity. AJK High Court Judge Justice Shahid Bahar had previously directed the government to restore internet services within 10 days, issuing the order during a hearing of two petitions filed by the AJK Bar Association and a local citizen.

The court's ruling applied to most areas but made an exception for zones where safety concerns prevented service restoration. Months of internet service interruptions have significantly impacted education, commerce, government functions, and digital services. On August 31, AJK Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani issued a notification partially restoring internet services in several districts, including Mirpur, Neelum, and Haveli, with Muzaffarabad remaining without full connectivity.

Internet services had been suspended since June 5 due to a protest led by the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee in Rawalakot. After about 48 days of disruption, services were partially restored but were suspended again on July 25 following a strike and clashes. Prime Minister Gilani announced the restoration of internet services during his first media appearance in Muzaffarabad on August 31.

The prolonged suspension of internet services has had a substantial negative impact on economic and professional activities. Students have been among the most adversely affected, while businesses reliant on digital transactions have suffered financial setbacks. Freelancers, government employees, and other professionals have also encountered challenges in carrying out their regular tasks due to the lack of dependable internet access.
