BREAKING: Angry followers kill man who stabbed Sokoto Cleric After Juma’at Prayer

In Sokoto city on Friday, a tragic incident erupted, leaving one man dead after a heated confrontation between Islamic followers and a man who had stabbed a respected cleric. The cleric, Malam Musa Lukwa, was stabbed multiple times during a sermon in the Mabera area of the city. It is believed the attacker was among the worshippers, seated in the front rows of the mosque.

The suspect, known as Mai Barewa, was reportedly angered by a sermon Malam Lukwa delivered earlier in the week, where he quoted a Hadith that some Islamic scholars deemed offensive.

Witnesses stated that the worshippers swiftly overpowered the attacker and killed him, preventing any further harm. Four policemen and eight villagers were also shot during the chaos that followed. The suspect had previously threatened to kill Malam Lukwa and his senior student, Malam Murtala Assada, following the controversy. Consequently, the cleric and his followers reported the threat to the authorities, resulting in the arrest and preliminary arraignment of the suspect.

The court later ordered the suspect to be held in a correctional facility for a period, while the case remained pending. Four days prior to the incident, the clerics had visited the Sokoto State Government House to submit a written complaint about the matter. DSP Ahmad Rufa'i, the spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, confirmed the cleric's condition at the Specialist Hospital in Sokoto and stated that the attacker had been killed by the cleric’s followers.

The police have not made any arrests regarding the violence that ensued and are currently investigating the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify any other potential suspects involved.
