Brasília’s Brazilian Film Festival kicks off Friday

The 59th edition of Brazil's longest-running film festival, the Brasília Brazilian Film Festival, kicked off on Friday, September 11, after a brief period of uncertainty. The festival had been canceled due to alleged funding issues but was promptly reinstated by the Federal District government within a few hours. Nearly 2,000 films were submitted for consideration, a record-breaking number for the event, with over 70 selected for various programs.

The festival will feature competitive programs for feature films and short films, along with parallel programs and special screenings celebrating artists and themes relevant to the Brazilian audiovisual scene. Notably, the Vozes e Lutas ("Voices and Struggles") section will showcase films that have depicted significant political and cultural movements, including Silvio Tendler's "Pontos de Partida" ("Starting Points"), which was directed by the late filmmaker who passed away in September last year.

Festival director Sara Rocha expressed high expectations, highlighting the strong presence of films from Brasília, which has a deep connection to the Federal District. The festival, established in 1965, has been a forum for discussions on Brazilian audiovisual culture, with the exception of two years during the military dictatorship.

In 2007, it was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the Federal District, a status that cannot be revoked. The general director declared their pride in presenting another edition of the festival, hoping for an enjoyable experience for everyone.
