Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has announced that major roads built under the government's Big Push initiative will be toll roads after completion. During the 2026 Transport Sector Review in Ho, the minister revealed that the Road Fund has been reinstated to ensure long-term financing for road infrastructure maintenance. The government aims to modernize revenue collection through technology, following the approval of a 20-year public-private partnership concession in July 2026.

Toll charges will be applied to the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, but motorists will not be forced to use it if they choose not to pay the toll. Every interchange in Ghana will be targeted for road tolling, with the Accra-Kumasi Expressway being a prime example, which will have its own tolling system. Contractors are returning to existing bypass roads in the Accra-Kumasi corridor, with the majority expected to resume work in the coming weeks.

Agbodza urged policymakers to implement measures that restrict heavy-duty vehicles from using certain public roads to prevent premature road deterioration. He emphasized that the government is introducing a multi-lane and free-flow electronic tolling system, which will be implemented across all improved public roads.
