Bargeld: Schluss mit „Cash only“ – Läden sollen Karten akzeptieren

Berlin is set to ban "Cash Only" signs from shops and restaurants, making it mandatory for them to accept digital payments via cards or mobile phones in the future. This initiative, led by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil of the SPD party, aims to phase out cash transactions. The exact details of the plan are being coordinated with other ministries.

While euro banknotes and coins remain the legal tender in Germany, necessitating the acceptance of cash by businesses, many smaller establishments, convenience stores, and restaurants currently do not offer card payment options. However, more cafes and self-service kiosks in supermarkets are increasingly requiring card payments, provided the customer and merchant have previously agreed upon this option.

It is customary for merchants to indicate with a sign that only card payments are accepted before a purchase. The goal is to give customers the freedom to choose between cash or digital payment methods, including cards, mobile phones, or contactless payments. This initiative is part of a coalition agreement between the Union and SPD parties, and the requirement will apply to the retail, gastronomy, and services sectors.
