As India probes origin of 5 baby orangutans, Indonesia prepares ground for repatriation

Five baby orangutans rescued from a forest in Odisha, India, have sparked an investigation into their origin by Indonesian authorities. The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has reportedly reached out to Indian authorities and is reportedly preparing technical requirements for potential repatriation if investigations confirm the orangutans are from Indonesia.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the orangutans may be from Sumatra, Indonesia, and Indonesian officials are investigating the possibility of a "well-organized transnational wildlife trafficking network." Indonesia's Directorate of Species and Genetic Conservation is coordinating with Indian authorities and is awaiting the completion of the investigation and necessary judicial authorization.

Under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the trading of orangutans, listed as critically endangered, is strictly regulated to prevent their extinction. Indonesia will cooperate with India in species and origin verification, and if the orangutans are confirmed to have originated from Indonesia, they will undergo the necessary measures for repatriation.
