Army commander orders troops to intensify operations against bandits in Kebbi

Colonel Joseph Umaru, the Acting Commander of the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, has ordered his troops in Kebbi State to step up their efforts against bandits and other criminals. This directive came during Umaru's tour of the brigade's units in Kebbi from September 8 to 9, 2026. The Nigerian Army announced this on X on Thursday.

Umaru emphasized the need for the troops to enhance their intelligence gathering, information sharing, and collaboration with other security agencies, local authorities, and other stakeholders. He aimed to prevent criminals from operating freely. The commander also instructed troops and commanders to carry out coordinated and proactive operations, while maintaining professionalism and strictly following the rules of engagement and ensuring the safety of civilians.

Umaru highlighted the significance of troop welfare, motivation, training, and professional development. He encouraged commanders to follow the "Soldiers First" mantra set by the Chief of Army Staff. A properly led, motivated and equipped army, he said, would better handle operational pressure and fulfill its duties. During the tour, Umaru evaluated the operational readiness and challenges of units under the brigade, including the 223 Light Tank Battalion in Zuru, COAS Intervention Battalion III in Sakaba, and 1 Battalion in Birnin Kebbi.
