Apple Enables One-Tap Gift Card Redemption in Upcoming iOS Update

Apple is set to launch iOS 27 on September 14, introducing a convenient feature for its users. This upcoming update will allow consumers to redeem Apple gift cards with just one tap on their compatible iPhones. The innovative technology scans a security chip embedded within the gift cards to verify their authenticity and ensure they have not been previously redeemed, aiming to minimize the risk of scams.

According to MacRumors, researcher Aaron Perris discovered this feature in the code. However, Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this new capability.

Gift cards have long been a target for fraudsters due to their ease of monetization, anonymity, and the lack of chargeback options, making it difficult to recover lost funds. In November 2023, PYMNTS reported that gift card scams have been gaining traction, with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reporting $228 million in losses in 2023, with an average loss of $500 per individual.

The FTC mentioned that Apple is frequently impersonated in gift card-related scams. Moreover, Apple faced legal action in January 2024 for allegedly enabling scammers to exploit its gift cards and retain a commission on stolen funds.

Apple's iOS 27 is scheduled to be unveiled at the company's annual fall event, Surprise and Shine, on September 14, marking the debut of the iPhone Duo. During the event, Apple CEO John Ternus highlighted significant improvements in intelligence, performance, battery life, and camera capabilities across their devices.
