Amsterdam artists behind 9/11 drone tribute in New York

An Amsterdam art collective and a Dutch designer collaborated to create a memorial light installation in New York for the Twin Towers on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Two thousand nine hundred seventy-seven drones, each representing a victim, were flown over New York Harbor to recreate the shape of the fallen skyscrapers.

The installation, titled "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor," appeared for 15 minutes twice, featuring the artistic expertise of Amsterdam studio Drift and Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The project, designed by Dutch digital artist Yan Paul Dubbelman and led by American creative director Addison Mehr, aimed to provide a beautiful tribute with light to those who lost loved ones in the attacks.

The event was postponed a day earlier due to security concerns and took place alongside Tribute in Light, a yearly projection of beams from Lower Manhattan.
