Algiers cuts diplomatic relations and Abu Dhabi shrugs

On September 10, Algeria severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a significant shift in their long-standing relationship. The move surprised few observers who had been watching the deterioration of ties between the two nations. Algeria's government accused the UAE of interfering in its internal affairs, referring to the Emirate as "the statelet."

In response, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining relations with other countries, urging the decision to be temporary. Diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, Dr. Anwar Gargash, criticized Algeria's actions, suggesting that relations should be managed through communication, clear interests, and not through "puzzles and signals."

The two nations have a history of contentious relations, stemming from disagreements over Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, support for Libyan rebel leader Khalifa Haftar, and involvement in the Sahel region. Despite these issues, Algeria has maintained close ties with Russia and Iran, while the UAE has strengthened its relationship with the United States and expanded its economic presence across Africa.

The immediate impact of the severed ties is likely to be limited, as Algerian citizens residing in the UAE will continue to be welcomed. However, the question remains as to why Algeria chose to end its diplomatic relations with the UAE now. Some speculate that Algeria may have run out of other enemies to blame for its economic struggles and lack of opportunities for its citizens, deciding instead to target the prosperous and distant UAE, which is unlikely to retaliate.
