Algeria to sever diplomatic ties with UAE

Algeria is set to cut diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates following a series of "provocative or hostile" actions by the Gulf nation, according to the Algerian foreign ministry. In a statement, Algeria expressed its dismay at the Emirati behavior and warned that the consequences of such actions could be dire. The statement did not specify the reasons behind this decision, but it highlighted the ongoing tension between the two countries, which has been fueled by a series of regional disputes.

A spokesman for UAE President Anwar Gargash stated that diplomatic relations are based on rationality, communication, and clear articulation of interests, rejecting the notion that diplomatic ties are based on riddles or signals. Gargash emphasized that successful diplomacy requires understanding and the management of interests and differences, asserting that ambiguity is not a policy and noise cannot compensate for the absence of a clear vision.

The Algerian foreign ministry, citing state media, stated that the UAE's actions had reached a point where it could no longer be tolerated, and that the country had exhausted all means to preserve bilateral relations. The UAE's ambassador was summoned to the Algerian ministry, where he was informed of the decision and given 48 hours to comply.

The deterioration of Algeria-UAE relations has been primarily due to their contrasting positions on several regional issues. Algeria opposes the normalization of diplomatic ties with Israel, a stance that both the UAE and Morocco – Algeria's neighbor and rival – have adopted under the US-led Abraham Accords. Additionally, the UAE supports Morocco's claim over Western Sahara, a long-standing territorial dispute, while Algeria has backed the Polisario Front, an armed group advocating for an independent state for the Sahrawi people.
