AfD’s historic Germany poll win puts Alice Weidel in spotlight: Who is its gay, pro-remigration leader?

Alice Weidel, a co-leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has become a prominent figure following the AfD's historic 43.8 percent victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, securing 39 seats in the 83-member parliament. The 47-year-old, who is openly gay and lives with her Sri Lankan-born partner Sarah Bossard and their two children, has defied the party's traditional family model and opposition to LGBT policies.

Despite the apparent contradiction, Weidel maintains that her sexuality does not conflict with the AfD's values, citing her opposition to immigration as the primary concern. The AfD's strong showing in Saxony-Anhalt has sparked speculation about the formation of Germany's first far-right state government since World War II, although the party would require support from another party to achieve this.
