€175 Million Torrevieja Hospital Expansion to Meet Needs of Growing Population

The Torrevieja University Hospital will receive a €175 million expansion, increasing its capacity by 75% and adding almost 190 new beds, as well as more than 650 healthcare professionals. The ambitious project, expected to be completed within six years, aims to address the growing healthcare needs of Torrevieja and the surrounding municipalities, which serve a population of over 225,000 in ten towns.

President of the Generalitat Juanfran Pérez Llorca announced the plans during a visit to the hospital, emphasizing it as a major investment in public healthcare for the southern Costa Blanca. The existing hospital, which opened in 2006, will gain approximately 30,000 square meters of additional floor space, raising its bed capacity from 270 to 457 - a 70% increase.

The expansion will include four new operating theaters, additional delivery rooms, a day-surgery unit, more intensive care beds, and extra haemodialysis stations. The project will be divided into three phases to ensure continuous clinical services during construction. Phase one, budgeted at €87.4 million, will expand and reorganize the hospital's main clinical areas, delivering additional beds and a new specialist centre.

Phase two, costing €34.4 million, will remodel the existing hospital building, expanding the surgical department with four additional operating theaters and new maternity delivery rooms. The third phase, investing €27.4 million, will improve surrounding roads and parking capacity from 900 to approximately 1,370 spaces. Additionally, 667 new professionals will be recruited at an estimated annual cost of €25.9 million, helping to reduce waiting times and expand access to various medical services in the rapidly growing area of the Valencian Community.
