Zelensky: Canada’s anti-ballistic sanctions could take effect in October

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism that Canada's upcoming sanctions package targeting Russia, specifically designed to hinder the production of ballistic missiles, could come into force as early as October. During a media interview in Canada, Zelenskyy highlighted the significance of accelerating this anti-ballistic sanctions effort.

He emphasized that Canada is in the process of introducing measures to make it more challenging for Russia to manufacture these missiles, alongside efforts to secure Patriot missiles and apply pressure on various Russian entities that contribute to the country's ballistic capabilities. The Ukrainian leader commended Canada for its proactive stance and expressed hope that the sanctions package would be expedited, potentially taking effect by October.

Zelenskyy also underscored the ongoing collaboration with Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sanctions coordinators to bolster anti-ballistic measures alongside other nations. He reiterated the urgent need to recover thousands of Ukrainian children held captive in Russia, emphasizing Canada's role in supporting initiatives aimed at returning these children and integrating them into Ukrainian society.

Addressing concerns about drone threats, including those targeting Zelenskyy's plane in Moldova, Zelenskyy reassured that while a few drones pose little concern, the real challenge lies in countering the influx of thousands of high-speed UAVs daily. He affirmed that Ukraine is committed to addressing this issue through technology advancements and increased production investments, indicating a strategic move towards co-production with international partners.

In Canada, Zelenskyy is engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, including the signing of a Declaration on a Centennial Partnership, reflecting a commitment to robust defense and diplomatic cooperation.
